POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Development (DoD) is responsible for strategizing and directing all fundraising initiatives. This position is a member of the Senior Management team at Montalvo.

The Director of Development will be a passionate individual with a rich background in development, a progressive and successful history in South Bay Area/Silicon Valley fundraising, and a strong track record of outstanding staff leadership. The DoD delights in serving as a primary relationship cultivator with internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate cares deeply about Montalvo’s mission, has a passion for the arts, and has experience working in nonprofit arts organizations.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Executive Director, Angela McConnell. Additionally, this position has four direct reports, including an Annual Fund and Stewardship Manager, Community Engagement Manager, Donor Operations Specialist, and part-time Grant Writer.

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Salary range is $150,000 - $175,000

YOU ARE

  • A deeply experienced fundraising professional in nonprofits arts and arts-adjacent organizations.

  • Outgoing and collaborative, you will build authentic partnerships with many stakeholders including staff, Board, donors, volunteers, foundations, corporations, and community partners

  • Confident, empathetic and accessible fundraiser who will forge long-term relationships and enroll all donors in the vision of Montalvo

  • Patient, understanding and encouraging mentor who is comfortable leading with gratitude and possesses an ‘all in this together’ attitude

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Devise and execute a fundraising plan to exceed Montalvo’s annual fundraising goal of $3 million.

  • Direct the planning and execution of all fundraising efforts including annual giving, major gifts, institutional giving, special events, research and database management and online gifts.

  • Act as the liaison to the Fund Development Committee and work closely with members of Montalvo staff, Trustees, major donors, contractors and volunteers.

  • Collaborate with the CEO and Board to develop outreach strategies to exceed fundraising goals and aid in recruitment of new Board members.

  • Prepare, review, and administer all fundraising budgets.

  • Manage, mentor, and collaborate effectively with a development staff of 4+ people. 

  • Oversee the development and execution of fundraising special events, including the annual gala and The Art of Food & Wine.

  • Champion Montalvo’s culture of philanthropy, engaging the full staff and Board in understanding the importance of giving and gratitude

  • Oversee direct mail and donor recognition programs.

    Supervise staff engaged in maintaining records of contributors and grants and preparing acknowledgement letters.

COMPETENCIES

  • Ten+ years of fundraising experience within non-profit organizations (preferably arts related) with budgets of $4 million or larger

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of South Bay Area & Silicon Valley philanthropy

  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of donors in order to sustain relationships between them and Montalvo

  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills

  • Experience managing a team and a desire to provide mentorship and coaching to team members

  • Excellent organizational skills with particular attention to detail and capacity to multitask under pressure

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently to achieve goals. Use independent judgment and produce a quality product within tight time constraints

  • Experience with Tessitura software beneficial

  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed

  • The position involves regular local travel; valid driver’s license and access to own vehicle is required

  • Occasional out-of-area and/or international travel may be required

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; MA desirable
