SCHOOL DESCRIPTION: At Life Learning Academy, we believe that every single kid deserves relentless love, accountability, and the chance to make a good life. Founded in 1998 out of the acclaimed Delancey Street model, Life Learning Academy (LLA) is a Bay Area youth-serving nonprofit and public charter high school on San Francisco’s Treasure Island that helps students and transition-age young adults succeed.
For over 25 years, we’ve provided an innovative, student-centered small-school community model for Bay Area youth who have not found a sense of belonging at other institutions. We believe that by addressing the social determinants of health and immersing our students in a community of mutual respect and accountability, they can surpass everyone’s expectations. This belief is supported by our high school graduation rates and our youths’ ability to stay employed, stably housed, and make a brighter future for themselves after they graduate. We are about to celebrate a quarter century of success, and are entering this milestone with ambitious plans to share our model across California to reach even more students.
LLA serves high school and transition age young adults (ages 14-24) who have been involved in the child welfare or juvenile justice systems, those who have been pushed out of traditional schools, youth who are invisible and falling through gaps between systems, and those experiencing profound isolation and disconnectedness. Our students are 98% youth of color, 82% socioeconomically disadvantaged, and more than ⅓ are unstably housed.
LLA offers a high school academic program, no fee student housing, mental health supports, daily homemade meals with ingredients sourced from its organic garden, workforce development, paid employment, concurrent college enrollment and support, culinary and carpentry programs, and ongoing alumni support for housing, work, and college persistence. Recognizing the impact that unsafe and/or insecure housing had on student success, in 2019 LLA opened a free on-campus dormitory where students live stably, communally, and learn the skills they need to work independently. In addition, LLA provides a summer employment and training program for Bay Area youth.
